This was some peasant whiner. I assume American, but didn’t bother to check. I picked myself up and went to Germany in 1985 and stayed and worked as a developer for 6 years. And then went to Switzerland for 2 years. I was almost the only American at Daimler-Benz, IBM and Lufthansa. Almost no one spoke English then and I have been back many time over almost the last 40 years. Program documentation was all in German, program comments all in German, and even some of the manuals. Only 2 of 5 in my team spoke usable English. I would take everything home with me every night and translate. All my friends were German and some spoke OK English but I ALWAYS tried use German and was fluent in under a year. I would listen only to German radio and watch only German TV and read Der Spiegel and FF Allgemeine. It is nonsense about how many Germans speak reasonable/usable English. Almost all learn decent English by the time they finish the secondary education (12th grade). Maybe he was living in some backwoods in the east of the country and that might make sense. The short of it is, if you want to work in a foreign country you learn the fucking language and culture and people or you’re an idiot or typical American.
