I have to believe there are a few similar responses. I see somewhat of one below. But here nevertheless...

As a 25 year-old healthcare worker, I'm going to suppose you have not seen or spent much time in the rest of the developed world. The short of it is, we don't have their history. We are a very different country where even very enlightened people are not so enlightened as to respond positively to the word "socialism" or "socialist". I know I am one but I would never call myself that in any political discussion with someone in this country who even is very liberal. Instead, if the subject ever comes up, I explain that Germany is a model I would think we should emulate. Everyone wants their cars, their design, their machine tools, their manufacturing design and build industry that lets the rest of the world operate an industrial economy.

I would then point out that they have budget surpluses, universal mandatory health insurance that provides benefits only available to wealthy Americans. I would point out that they have never had an export deficit. And so on.

I would also point out that they have federally-mandated 6 week paid vacations, 9-12 month paid maternity leave and 6 month paid paternity leave. And people are given a percentage of their salary and keep their employment relationships during downturns like this.

In short, instead of acting and sounding like you're from the 1920s and 30s with all the "capitalist this" and "socialist that", I would ask them if the above sounds good. And then point out that this is common in Germany, Holland, Denmark, Sweden, Belgium, Austria, France, and Switzerland. And sort of UK and Canada.

Otherwise, most Americans have no good idea what you're saying except what nonsense they've been fed all their lives. So they will just keep on thinking this is still the greatest country on earth and living in No World.
